· To Captain Price : 1 autograph letter signed : [late Nov or early Dec 1784] : (MISC 0583) : regarding the sailing of the ship Surprise; with a note in another 18th century hand giving approximate date. · To "Dear Sir" [probably Sir Thomas Lawrence, English painter] : 1 autograph letter signed : 22 Feb 1811 : (MISC 0584) : from Daylesford House : enclosing a check (no longer present) for "the balance due to you from me"; giving consent to the exhibition of a portrait of himself at the Royal Academy. Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Hastings, commissioned for the wife of Colonel Barton, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1811.

Hastings was the first governor general of British India. He began in 1750 as a clerk at the East India Company. In 1761, he was appointed to the Calcutta Council, and in 1769, was made a member of the Madras Council. In 1771, he became governor of Bengal, and in 1774, governor general of India. In 1784, he resigned and returned to England, where he was charged with high crimes and misdemenears. He was impeached in 1787 but, after a long trial, was acquitted in 1795.
